Case Study: Creating a Safe System of Work for a High‑Risk Adventure Sports Sector

Sector: Outdoor Adventure Training / Extreme Sports

Service Provided: Site Risk Assessment & Development of Field‑Based Safe System of Work

Challenge

An adventure sports training provider operating in dynamic, high‑risk outdoor environments needed a structured, reliable way to manage safety across multiple instructors and locations. Their existing approach relied heavily on instructor experience, which created inconsistencies in how risks were identified, communicated, and controlled.

The organisation required a sector‑appropriate Safe System of Work (SSOW) that could be applied across varied terrain, changing weather conditions, and unpredictable participant behaviour.

Solution

WKB Safety conducted a full on‑site risk assessment, covering:

  • Emergency response arrangements

  • Welfare facilities

  • Induction processes

  • Instructor‑led activity controls

  • Environmental and location‑specific hazards

This work was carried out over two days, as reflected in the quote:

“Site Risk Assessment… over the period of 1 working day. To cover the creation of a field based risk assessment format working with the instructors over the period of 1 working day.”

Working directly with instructors, we developed a field‑ready risk assessment format designed specifically for fast‑moving, high‑risk outdoor activities. The system was built to be:

  • Practical — usable in real outdoor conditions

  • Consistent — ensuring all instructors followed the same process

  • Dynamic — allowing rapid updates based on weather, terrain, or participant needs

  • Compliant — aligned with industry best practice and legal requirements

Outcome

The new Safe System of Work delivered:

  • A standardised approach to risk assessment across all instructors

  • Improved emergency preparedness and welfare arrangements

  • A clear induction process for staff and participants

  • Stronger legal compliance and documentation

  • A safer, more controlled environment for high‑risk activities

This project created a repeatable safety framework that can be applied across the wider adventure sports sector, not just a single organisation.

Why This Matters

Adventure and extreme sports carry inherent risks. By developing a structured, field‑based SSOW, WKB Safety helped raise safety standards for an entire category of high‑risk activities — demonstrating our capability to support even the most challenging operational environments.

Our Commitment to Client Confidentiality

At WKB Safety, we work with organisations across a wide range of sectors, many of which operate in sensitive, regulated, or commercially competitive environments. Because of this, we take client confidentiality extremely seriously.

For this reason, the case studies and examples on our website are fully anonymised. We do not publish client names, locations, or identifying details unless we have explicit permission to do so.

This approach protects:

  • Operational security

  • Commercially sensitive information

  • Staff, service users, and site‑specific risks

  • Confidential internal processes and documentation

Our priority is always to safeguard the organisations we support. However, we understand that prospective clients may wish to verify our experience. Where appropriate, and with prior agreement, we can provide references or further detail privately.

WKB Safety remains committed to delivering professional, proportionate, and discreet health & safety support to every client we work with.
